Four years ago, the Chicago Bulls dominated the free-agent market with confidence and bold moves. They brought in DeMar DeRozan, Lonzo Ball, and Alex Caruso to build a championship-caliber lineup alongside Zach LaVine and Nikola Vucevic. This “Big Five” looked unstoppable on paper, combining offense, defense, shooting, and interior dominance. It revived hopes of a Bulls dynasty.
Initially, the team lived up to the hype, surging to the top of the Eastern Conference standings and earning a long-awaited playoff berth. However, injuries soon derailed their success. Lonzo Ball suffered a severe knee injury that has sidelined him for over two years, and Zach LaVine faced recurring health issues. As a result, the Bulls slid back into mediocrity, repeatedly falling short of playoff expectations.
This summer saw further changes. DeRozan joined the Sacramento Kings, and Caruso was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Now, only Lonzo Ball, Zach LaVine, and Nikola Vucevic remain from the original core. But their days in Chicago seem numbered, as Bulls management has decided to rebuild.
Despite their current 8-13 record and sitting 11th in the Eastern Conference, the front office appears ready to move on. According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Bulls are open to trading LaVine, Vucevic, and Ball before the deadline. Veteran reporter Marc Stein adds that the Bulls are confident in making at least one blockbuster deal to part ways with a high-profile veteran as part of their rebuilding plans.
For the Los Angeles Lakers, this is a golden opportunity. The Lakers have been looking to upgrade their frontcourt, and Vucevic could be the ideal solution.
This season, Vucevic is averaging 20.9 points, 10 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game while shooting an impressive 57.7% from the field, 46.9% from three-point range, and 83.7% from the free-throw line. With his size, skill, and shooting ability, Vucevic would be a game-changer in countering players like Nikola Jokić in the playoffs. Pairing him with Anthony Davis would give the Lakers a formidable All-Star frontcourt capable of contending for a title.
The best part? The Bulls’ asking price for Vucevic is surprisingly low. Reports suggest they’re seeking multiple second-round picks and a promising young player—not the usual demand for first-round picks. For the Lakers, who are short on frontcourt depth, this is an excellent opportunity to strengthen their lineup.
Rob Pelinka, this is your moment. Don’t let this chance slip away to bring the Lakers back to championship contention.
