Has the AI Boom Fizzled Out? ChatGPT Usage and Growth Decline

The meteoric rise of ChatGPT seems to be slowing down significantly. As of early June, a Morgan Stanley survey conducted in April with 2,000 participants revealed that only 19% had used ChatGPT before, and a mere 4% stated they rely on it.

According to data from website analytics platform SimilarWeb, ChatGPT initially experienced explosive growth. Its month-over-month growth rate in January was an astonishing 131.6%, dropping to 62.5% in February, 55.8% in March, and then noticeably slowing to 12.6% in April. By May, this growth rate had plummeted to just 2.8%. June may even see negative growth.

Some users have reported dissatisfaction with the quality of responses. From personal experiences shared by long-time users, ChatGPT answers can appear accurate at first glance but often fail under scrutiny. Mistakes arise when it misunderstands questions, and over-reliance on its answers has led to noticeable errors. Interestingly, some users claim that ChatGPT’s performance was better in earlier months and that its quality declined by May or June, prompting them to stop using the tool altogether.

Limited Use Cases

ChatGPT’s application scenarios remain restricted. Frequent users have pointed out that while ChatGPT functions like an upgraded version of Google or Bing and can assist with research and ideas, it doesn’t yet replace experts or experienced professionals. There is a clear demand for a more advanced version of ChatGPT.

However, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently stated that there are no immediate plans to develop GPT-5. He even suggested that “the era of large AI models might be coming to an end.”
