Elon Musk’s $97.4 Billion OpenAI Takeover Rejected – Altman Fires Back

Musk Seeks to Take Over OpenAI? Altman Fires Back: ‘We Can Buy Twitter’

According to a consortium led by Elon Musk has made a $97.4 billion offer to take control of OpenAI, the U.S.-based artificial intelligence research center.

Musk’s Offer & OpenAI’s Response

Musk’s attorney, Mark Toberoff, confirmed that the acquisition proposal has been submitted to OpenAI’s board.

However, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman immediately rejected the offer. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Altman responded sarcastically:

“No thanks. But if you’re interested, we can buy Twitter for $9.74 billion.”

Musk didn’t hold back, replying by calling Altman a “liar.”

Musk vs. OpenAI: A Long-Running Feud

Musk and Altman have a complicated history. The two co-founded OpenAI, but their relationship soured over leadership disputes.

Last year, Musk sued OpenAI, accusing the company of abandoning its original mission of nonprofit AI research in favor of profit-driven goals. He later sought a court order to block OpenAI’s transformation into a fully commercial entity. A federal court in California is scheduled to hear the case in February.

Meanwhile, Musk has launched his own AI company, xAI, which is currently building a data center in Memphis, Tennessee. He has also claimed that OpenAI and Microsoft are engaging in unfair competition against xAI.

What’s Musk’s Endgame?

According to Ethan Mollick, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, Musk’s criticism of OpenAI isn’t just personal—he also sees a competitive advantage in the AI race.

Reports indicate that Musk is purchasing AI chips at a faster rate than any other company, positioning xAI to be a serious competitor in the artificial intelligence industry.

What’s Next?

With legal battles ahead and the AI war heating up, the Musk-Altman rivalry is far from over. Whether Musk succeeds in challenging OpenAI or Altman continues to dominate the AI space, one thing is clear—this fight is just beginning.
